YLDP Update – April 2026

As the school year begins to wind down, April gave our Youth Leadership Development Program students time to reflect, connect, create, and celebrate everything they have accomplished together this year.
One of the biggest highlights of the month was receiving the custom YLDP T-shirts designed by the teens themselves. The shirts were a true collaboration, with students sharing ideas and creativity throughout the process, and the final designs turned out pretty cool. It was exciting to see their vision come to life and celebrate something created together as a group.
Throughout April, students continued building leadership skills and exploring new experiences through enrichment activities and community connections. Ysanne Johnson and Kyndal Gragg joined the group for a job presentation focused on information sciences, sharing valuable insight and conversation about careers and future opportunities. YLDP volunteer, Adrienne Dalenberg, led an SEL-themed Escape Room activity that challenged students to work together, communicate, and problem-solve as a team.
YLDP students also visited the University of Illinois Springfield for a field trip where they toured the campus facilities, explored dorms and recreation spaces, and got a glimpse into college life. Unsurprisingly, the dorms and rec rooms were a favorite part of the visit! (see pics below)

Students also spent time creating art projects with Christy Freeman Stark and participating in meaningful end-of-year conversations reflecting on their experiences. One especially engaging group brainstorm centered around the question: “If you were principal for a day…” Students shared ideas about leadership, school culture, and ways to support students.
A huge thank you goes to our generous dinner providers:

As we head into the final week of YLDP for the school year, the focus is all about celebration! We are celebrating friendships, leadership, growth, and the memories made together throughout the year. We are so proud of these teens and thankful for the mentors, volunteers, staff, supporters, and community members who have encouraged and invested in them every step of the way.
